  • Desperate Until

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” …He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Mark 10:17, 22 (3-3-11) Ran and fell on his knees. The dude was desperate. Like…

  • Amazed

He was amazed at their lack of faith. Mark 6:6 (2-27-11) Best I can tell, this is the only way we can amaze God. [Father, help me to never “amaze” You.]

  • Contempt

Numbers 14:11 (2-24-11) The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them? Contempt. That is the word God uses when talking about their (and our) lack of faith. Not worry,…

  • Discouraging

“Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” Numbers 13:2 (2-23-11) That verse always depresses me. Sure, there’s nothing in the verse itself, it’s just I know what’s coming next. Ten of the twelve are going to bring…

  • Spotlight

“Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.’” Numbers 8:2 (2-22-11) So, what’s the big deal? Well, it’s a room only one priest enters about once a day. So why not aim the lights so the whole…

  • Strange List

You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Acts 15:29 (2-10-11) Interesting list. Not what I would have predicted. Nothing specifically out of the Ten Commandments. Nothing I’d call significantly Jewish. And nothing I…

  • In or Out

The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; Psalm 15:2 NIV (2-6-11) Speaks the truth from their heart. Interestingly, ESV translation says “in their heart” or something like that. Somewhat opposite, somewhat not. From the heart means what we say to others; in the heart…

  • Peace or Turmoil

You keep him in perfect peacewhose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.Isaiah 26:3-4 (2-1-11) So, if this is true, what does it mean if my mind and emotions are in turmoil? Yep, it’s a gauge. It means my mind isn’t set…

  • Backward Blessing

Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence. Genesis 47:10 (1-29-11) Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Isn’t that backwards? Shouldn’t the sheep herder be bowing to the king? Not if the sheep herder has been anointed by God. Not if the whole earth will be blessed, not by the royal dude in the palace, but…

  • Silence

But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name. Acts 4:17 (1-28-11) There’s only one way to stop the Gospel, and that’s it. Get believers to be silent. Persecution only fuels the fire. Getting us to shut up puts…

For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.

I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.

As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.

Find me on:
