Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 1 Corinthians 1:9 (Originally written 4-2-2011) I started to write one of my normal “me-bashing” posts, but I’m not sure that’s fully accurate. Do I still have trouble…

  • Temptation

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12 (3-25-2011) It’s scary to put that in my journal. It’s like I’m opening myself up to failure. Of course, that’s exactly backwards and exactly opposite of what the verse is talking about. The point is, if you think…

  • Marionette

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 (3-22-2011) I’m constantly trying to revive myself, to live my life my…

  • Battle Lessons

When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours/, do not be afraid of them/, because the lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. (Deut 20:1, 3-12-11) Four quick lessons on dealing with, well, life: 1) Face Reality.…

  • Seasons

So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning. Ruth 1:22 (4-8-11) It’s very important to know what season you’re in. For Ruth, God’s timing brought them back to Israel at the start of the barley harvest. That meant there was gleaning to…

  • Inquire

The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. Joshua 9:14 (3-21-11) Not sure how many times I’ve journaled this verse. I’m sure quite a few. But it’s still powerful, especially for someone like me. I like to study the data, check the demographics, look for trends. But if I’m not careful,…

  • When Reality Sucks

“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them.” (Joshua 1:2, 3-18-11) God starts out his message to Joshua with a sobering statement. Moses, the man you’ve followed your entire adult life, is dead. Welcome…

  • Competing Visions

God said this through Moses: However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, if only you fully obey the lord your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving…

  • Love Who?

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving…

  • Counterattack

So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. Mark 9:20 (3-2-11) What, you think when the evil spirit sees it’s going to be attacked, it’s going to go passive? Nope, it’s going to attack…

For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.

I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.

As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.

Find me on:
