  • Wrong Brother?

Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor. (GEN 22:23 NIV, 1-28-14) Looks like God picked the wrong brother. I mean, if the plan is to build a new nation, the brother with eight sons trumps the brother with one (even if Nahor does name two of them…

  • In Wrath Remember Mercy

Lord, I have heard of your fame;I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.Repeat them in our day,in our time make them known;in wrath remember mercy.Habakkuk 3:2 NIV (12-12-13) Two huge components in that prayer. First is the broad concept. Those amazing things you’ve done in the past, God? Do them again. And that brings…

  • A Decision Grid

Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, … So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley. … So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar…

  • Satisfaction

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth.”(Matthew 6:19, 12-19-13) I feel myself pull back from this verse, unwilling to face it head on, looking at it, as it were, from the side. Why? Because I want to store up treasures on earth. I want the nice house, the cool vacation, the big bank…

  • Class Is Not Dismissed

Then Job answered the Lord : “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more.” (Job 40:3-5 NIV, 11-25-13) Job cries “uncle”, but God’s not done. You’ll notice this is Job 40, but the…

  • The Source of Struggles

Know that God has wronged me and drawn his net around me. …He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness. (Job 19:6, 8 NIV, 11-13-13) And the danger appears. This is a key challenge when God is testing us–or allowing us to be tested. We start ascribing…

  • Backwards

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. (1 Corinthians 9:19 NIV, 10-30-13) I’m a slave to the people at my gym. I’m a slave to the waiters at the restaurants I frequent. I’m a slave to every unsaved person…

  • A Pat on the Back

Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. (1 Corinthians…

  • Embracing the Screwed-Up

Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. (1 Corinthians 7:17 NIV, 10-22-13) This is the opposite of how we tend to live. Our goal seems to always be to move ourselves to a better, less screwed-up situation. But what does…

  • Is It Okay To…

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. (1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV, 10-19-13) A question pastors are asked a lot (and a questions pastors sometimes ask themselves as well), “Is it okay for me to…?” Some…

For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.

I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.

As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.
