Dust
As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. (PSA 103:13-14 NIV, 7-24-14) He remembers that we are dust. Possibly among the most comforting words in scripture. I know I’m dust, or at…

Less Than Perfect
The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” (1 Kings 3:4-5 NIV,…

Something to Ponder
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. (PRO 14:30 NIV, 5-9-14) This is one of those meditation verses, one I need to memorize and internalize. [Father, teach me to be content and not envious.]

Scared, but…
As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. (EXO 14:10 NIV, 4-23-14) We get on them for it, but in this case terrified is the proper response. Could they have really known that God had called Pharoah to this…

What Do You See?
Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.” (JOS 6:1-2 NIV, 4-6-14) What God sees–and asks us to see–is often…

War?
You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (MAT 5:43-45 NIV, 3-11-14) I don’t hear Christians quote this much. Seems we’re in a culture war…

No Rescue
Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” (EXO 5:22-23 NIV, 2-20-14) Getting…

Sabbath
“Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.” (EXO 34:21 NIV, 3-8-14) Rest. Even when things are busy and you’re getting important things done. Or maybe especially when things are busy and you’re getting important things done. [Father, thank you…

Give Up Sooner
Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help. (JDG 6:6 NIV, 4-17-14) And that’s how I work. I try everything I can do, lean totally on my own abilities, then, when I’ve failed to the level of impoverishment, I cry out to God for help. Sure, during the process…

Volume Control
Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. (NUM 9:22 NIV, 3-12-14) This section is a great example for us. When God says Stay, stay. When God says Go,…
For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.
I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.
As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.
