Anger AND Joy
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV, 9-26-13) I think I’m out of balance on this one. Paul manages to hold in tension his joy that Jesus died for him, and his anger (built on his…

Whatever You Want
We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, (1 Timothy 1:9 NIV, 8-9-13) If the law isn’t for us, does that mean we can do whatever we want?…

Living with Uncertainty
Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves. (1 Timothy 3:14-15 NIV, 8-13-13) Two interesting words he uses there: ‘Hope’ and ‘if.’ We want certainty. But outside of a promise of eternal life in…

Not Really #Blessed
You will eat but not be satisfied; your stomach will still be empty. You will store up but save nothing, because what you save I will give to the sword. (Micah 6:14 NIV, 6-26-13) A lot like America. We consume constantly but are never satisfied. Stuff continuously comes to us–and passes through our hands. And…

Weed Tolerant
I will uproot from among you your Asherah poles when I demolish your cities. (Micah 5:14 NIV, 6-24-13) How badly does God want this sin out of His people’s lives? He’ll demolish the cities in order to uproot the idols. If you view the sin like weeds in a garden, He’s willing to destroy the…

Dew or Lion
The remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the Lord , like showers on the grass, which do not wait for anyone or depend on man. The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of…

Prophecy for Profit
you who hate good and love evil;who tear the skin from my peopleand the flesh from their bones;who eat my people’s flesh, This is what the Lord says: “As for the prophets who lead my people astray, they proclaim ‘peace’ if they have something to eat, but prepare to wage war against anyone who refuses…

Maybe Don’t Read This One
Note: This was written in June of 2013. All this is because of Jacob’s transgression, because of the sins of the people of Israel. What is Jacob’s transgression? Is it not Samaria? What is Judah’s high place? Is it not Jerusalem? (Micah 1:5 NIV, 6-6-13) Samaria and Jerusalem were the capitols of the divided kingdom.…

Pray Without Quitting
Then the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for these people anymore.” (Jeremiah 14:11 NLT, , 4-2-13) God tells Jeremiah, “Quit praying for these people.” Jeremiah’s response? But I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! The prophets keep telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Indeed, I will give you lasting peace…
For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.
I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.
As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.
