  • He Is Risen!

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly…

  • Courageous Prayer

Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. (2 Samuel 7:27 NIV, 12-31-12) Courage to pray a blessing for yourself. Sure, it might be tough to presume to ask God for…

  • Now?

Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.” (1 Kings 17:24 NIV, 12-31-12) Now? For months they’d been eating from two “empty” jars, but she didn’t really believe he was a man of God…

  • Hope?

To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. …The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the…

  • Sort Of

“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! ” (Jeremiah 7:21 NIV, 11-12-12) They were doing God’s will–sort of. There were certain sacrifices the people were supposed to burn almost all of, others they burned very little–and…

  • A Lot of Faith

When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. (1 Samuel 10:20 NIV, 12-31-12) Faith. Samuel knew Saul was to be king. He’d already anointed him. But he wanted, needed, the people to know it was God’s choice, too. So he went through with the lot process,…

  • Eyes Open

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. (Colossians 4:2, 12-30-12) Being watchful. I’m assuming that means to be paying attention. That means, in a sense, praying with your eyes open. It means knowing what’s going on in the community around you, in the world around you. Praying with the insight that comes from paying…

  • Opportunity and Opposition

But I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me. (1 Corinthians 16:8-9, 12-30-12) Opportunity and opposition. Not mutually exclusive. Matter of fact they often come together. Which only makes sense. Satan is going to oppose anything with…

  • Pick Your Poison

They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord , when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of…

  • Sin Block

Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good. (Jeremiah 5:25 NIV, 11-7-12) I believe that is a universal truth, not limited to Israel. Sin keeps good from us. And sin keeps good from me. Oh, not always the sins Jeremiah rails against. But sins like pride and the desire for…

For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.

I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.

As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.
