Nothing Yet, Part 2
He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are…

Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet
Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” (John 1:50 NIV, 8-28-11) Do I settle for too little from God? Do I take the admittedly-amazing things He’s done for me (and our church) and think, “That’s all I can expect. He’s…

At His Word
“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. (John 4:50 NIV, 8-25-11) One of the Bible’s greatest acts of faith. How did he do it? How did he walk away without begging Jesus to go with him. I’d have at least asked for a sign or maybe…

Unsuspected Idols
Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low; their idols are borne by beasts of burden. The images that are carried about are burdensome, a burden for the weary. (Isaiah 46:1 NIV, 7-27-11) That’s the true sign of an idol. You carry it. It bears you down. Jesus said His burden is light and Isaiah says God…

Hell’s Titanic
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5 NIV, 8-25-11) Why did he say ‘Has not overcome it?’ Why not ‘Will never overcome it’? My guess is because darkness easily got its best shot while Jesus was on earth. And when Jesus said “It is finished,” one of…

Angry or Sad?
Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. (John 12:6 NIV, 8-25-11) Did Jesus know Judas was stealing? I’m sure He did. How do you think it made Him…

Because You Have Prayed
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the lord, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria… (Isaiah 37:21 NIV, 7-24-11) Very few stories outside of the Gospels are in the Bible twice. Even including the Gospels, few stories are in…

Both
In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered. 2 Chron 31:21 NIV (7-20-11) Wholeheartedly Sought his God and worked Both. Not worked all out but sought God half-heartedly. Not sought God with…

Winners and Losers?
<You may want to read Hebrews 11:32-39 before reading this. I’ll copy it below.> These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Hebrews 11:39-40 (NIV) (6-14-11) Only together…
For years, I’ve produced brief devotional videos called Jumpstarts that I published in various outlets. (You can find them here, as well as the odd podcast.) The root of those videos was daily Bible journals I’ve been doing for decades.
I recently decided to take a hiatus from the videos, and instead publish excerpts from those journals here.
As you’ll soon see, they tend to be brief, normally consisting of just one main idea. They may also be a little rough. I’m not going to do much editing. You’ll get them just the way they came out of my brain, years, days, or months ago.
Find me on:
