Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good. (Jeremiah 10:5 NIV, 11-19-12)
We look down on the people in old times who believed idols could help or hurt them in any way. But do we do any better when we acknowledge that materialism can’t bring us happiness, then pursue stuff with just as much energy as our non-Christian neighbors?
Matter of fact we are probably dumber, because they didn’t know their idols were worthless. We know money won’t buy happiness and power doesn’t create satisfaction and the grass really isn’t greener, but we still crave money and power and look longingly across the fence.
[Father, help me to live what I say I believe and truly seek my satisfaction and contentment in you.]
