So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12 (3-25-2011)
It’s scary to put that in my journal. It’s like I’m opening myself up to failure.
Of course, that’s exactly backwards and exactly opposite of what the verse is talking about. The point is, if you think you’re immune from temptation–real, follow-it-into-the pit temptation–you’re susceptible. The only defense against sin is an awareness that it is knocking at the door. And if I pretend I’m invincible I’ve opened myself up.
So watch for temptation today. And realize I’m not above it, but need to stay on guard against it, aware of the next verse:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
[Father, help me to be on guard against temptation today in all it’s forms.]
